Study: People of color and women “still vastly underpaid” in Post newsroom
While The Washington Post has made some progress closing the pay gap, women and people of color are still paid less compared with their male and White colleagues, the Washington Post Guild reported last week. The follow-up to the Guild’s 2019 pay study re-examined compensation at The Washington Post by race, gender, age and department, concluding “Though the company seems to be making a concerted effort to hire more people of color, it is not retaining them.” The study also found that while the Post has expanded exponentially over the past several years, “its workforce has remained just as White,” with Black employees declining as a share of the business side of the company by 8.3 percentage points, and as a share of the newsroom by one percentage point. The report includes recommendations on ways the Post can build on its latest commitments to diversity and inclusion, which will be formal proposals the Guild brings to contract bargaining this spring.

Today’s Labor Quote: George Meany
Meany, a former president of the AFL-CIO, was on one of the Sunday talk shows some years ago. The moderator said, “Mr. Meany, last week we had Mr. So-and-So on the program, he’s a very wealthy financier and lawyer, and he referred to you as a dumb plumber.”
“Well,” Meany said, “that’s an old one, we hear it all the time. You know, I’m from New York and I would a hell of lot rather live in New York if it had no wealthy financiers and lawyers than if it had no plumbers.”
Thanks to Friday's Folklore's Saul Schniderman for sharing this story and quote after seeing Washington DC Joint Plumbing Apprenticeship Committee Training Director Chris Biondi’s quote here. |
