DOJ Will Challenge Repeal of Mask Mandate if CDC Gives Green Light
From the story: U.S. airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday took just hours to announce that they’d stop enforcing a federal transportation mask mandate, once a Florida federal judge said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention illegally adopted the rule in February 2021. Jenifer Bologna, an attorney for Jackson Lewis, said she doesn’t expect the CDC to appeal the ruling given the mask mandate was meant to expire in May and that transportation companies, including airlines, had been pushing back against it ( Yahoo). RNC Research: Biden admin, 1PM: Yes, we want masks on planes Biden himself, 2PM: No, masks should be optional Biden admin, 3PM: Yes, we want masks on planes ( Twitter). From MSN: The Department of Justice announced Tuesday night it would appeal the recent ruling that voided the federal mask mandate on public transit if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deems it necessary ( MSN).

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Moves to Erase Disney’s Special Status
From the story: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is following through on his promise to try and cancel a 1967 deal between the state and the Walt Disney Co. that led to the creation of the Magic Kingdom. If repealed, Walt Disney could be on the hook for millions of dollars a year in local taxes, and could lose some autonomy over its property. The proposal follows weeks of public attacks on Disney by the governor, who has criticized the company for opposing a new Florida law that limits how educators discuss LGBTQ issues in the classroom ( Washington Post). From MSN: Democrats have long been critical of the sway Disney holds over lawmakers. The company has donated millions to politicians in Florida, mostly members of the GOP, including DeSantis ( MSN).

Washington Post Reporter Accused of Doxxing Social Media Account Exposing Radical Left
From the story: Taylor Lorenz, the Washington Post’s internet culture beat reporter, is being accused of “doxxing” the anonymous woman who operates the popular Twitter account “Libs of TikTok.” Lorenz, the former New York Times journalist who earlier this month broke down in tears on MSNBC while recounting “harassment” she has experienced online, published an article on Tuesday revealing the identity of the social media user ( New York Post). The Federalist: The piece is so clearly agenda-driven that it would be laughable if it wasn’t so dangerous and appalling. At a time when anti-Semitic attacks in the U.S. are at an all-time high, editors at The Washington Post thought it was a good idea to identify a private citizen as an Orthodox Jew, a detail that is entirely irrelevant to the story, then link to said person’s real estate license, including the person’s name, real estate license number, and physical address. The newspaper only removed the link after public pushback ( Federalist). Glenn Greenwald: Perhaps there’s a small difference between investigating crimes by powerful US officials and doxing anonymous Twitter users. The failure to recognize this distinction is a key pathology of modern-day journalism: why Assange is in prison and TikTok Taylor is a “star reporter” ( Twitter).

Public Servants Are Wiping Out Their Own Student Loans
On Tuesday, the Education Department announced steps to bring borrowers enrolled in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program and income-driven repayment (IDR) plans closer to relief through fixes to “longstanding failures,” per the press release. PSLF, which is intended to forgive student debt for public servants after ten years of qualifying payments, has failed borrowers over past years due to its high denial rate, and Federal Student Aid estimated the new actions will wipe out student debt for 40,000 of those borrowers ( Business Insider). Albert Mohler: This would actually be a massive redistribution of wealth coming from other American taxpayers given to financially advantaged Americans when it comes to those who, after all, have had the opportunity to attend college, most of them graduated from college, they have the benefit of that education, and frankly, they took out that money with the pledge that they would pay it back ( Albert Mohler).

Netflix Loses 200k Subscribers, Stock Takes Deep Dive
From the story: Netflix suffered its first subscriber loss in more than a decade, causing its shares to plunge 25% in extended trading amid concerns that the pioneering streaming service may have already seen its best days. The company’s customer base fell by 200,000 subscribers during the January-March period, according to a quarterly report released Tuesday ( Associated Press). From MarketWatch: The problem, as executives see it, is the range of new competitors that have arrived in the streaming arena, and the number of customers who are sharing their passwords with potential subscribers who instead use the service for free. In a letter to shareholders announcing the results Tuesday, executives said they estimate 100 million additional households are using accounts owned by their 222 million subscribers. Worsening matters, company executives blamed sluggish economic growth, inflation, geopolitical events such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and “some continued disruption from COVID” ( MarketWatch).

From the story: House Majority Whip James Clyburn has showered numerous family members with more than $200,000 in campaign cash in recent years, a Fox News Digital review of campaign records found. The South Carolina Democrat’s campaign expenditures have made their way to five relatives, including two of his daughters, their husbands and a grandson, the records show. One family member benefiting from his campaign’s operations is Jennifer Clyburn Reed, Rep. Clyburn’s daughter, who has pocketed $45,000 for a “campaign management fee” between July and December 2020 ( Fox News). The Daily Caller: Clyburn is one of several members of Congress who have funneled money to relatives through campaign accounts in recent years. Democratic Connecticut Rep. Jahana Hayes paid her adult children more than $35,000 out of campaign funds since entering Congress in 2021. Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters paid her daughter more than $100,000 during the 2018 election cycle ( Daily Caller).

We see more of these types of candidates because of the incentive structure of our contemporary media Jim Geraghty: Lots of people in the left-of-center mainstream media fume about shallow, uninformed celebrity candidates and how these fame addicts aren’t truly committed to doing the work of being a legislator, and then give all their attention and airtime to shallow, uniformed celebrity candidates.
