Last winter, U.S. beekeepers reported losing an average of 40% of their hives.
These were the worst winter losses ever on record.
And the news just keeps getting worse. Scientists recently conducted the first
comprehensive global meta-study of insect decline, and they found that essential
pollinators and other insects could go extinct within a century.
A key contributing factor in this crisis is the growing use of toxic pesticides
produced by companies like Bayer-Monsanto. The evidence is clear -- we have to
get these pesticides out of our food system.
Kroger, the nation’s largest supermarket chain, could contribute to the
solution. But instead, it’s part of the problem. It’s still selling far too much
food produced with bee-killing and butterfly-harming pesticides.
Together, we can push Kroger to refuse to sell products grown with these toxic
chemicals. Your help is critical, which is why I’m asking you to take one simple

Clearly, the bees can’t wait -- and neither can we. Friends of the Earth is
pulling out all the stops, working on several fronts in an effort to push this
issue to the top of our national agenda.
Indeed, with Members like you standing with us, Friends of the Earth is already
making a huge amount of progress in our campaign to save bees and other
pollinators:
* We’re continuing to expose the pesticide industry’s cozy ties to the Trump
Administration. Pesticide industry executives are swarming into cushy
government positions regulating the very industries they used to work for.
Meanwhile, they suppress the science on pesticides’ harm to human and
pollinator health.
* We co-authored a peer-reviewed study that found the massive increase in the
use of persistent neonicotinoids creates a cumulative toxic burden in the
environment that is much higher than that experienced by insects 25 or more
years ago. The study was picked up by major media outlets like National
Geographic, NPR and The Guardian -- increasing pressure on lawmakers and
corporations to solve this crisis.
* Our campaigners are going to Capitol Hill to urge Members of Congress to
restrict toxic pesticides. We’re building support for bills like the Saving
America’s Pollinators Act and a bill to ban Dow’s nerve gas pesticide
chlorpyrifos.
* We’re pushing food retailers to eliminate pesticides, including neonics, from
their supply chains. In response to our campaign, Aldi just announced it’s
taking steps to reduce the use of bee-killing pesticides in the food it sells
and increase its organic offerings. Now, we’re using that momentum to build
pressure on Kroger to follow suit.
The evidence is clear: We must greatly reduce our use of pesticides if we are to
save these crucial species and prevent a “Second Silent Spring.”
You know that when we work together, we can move mountains. You and I have
already transformed the garden industry, including convincing Home Depot,
Lowe’s, Costco, True Value, Ace Hardware and Walmart to eliminate bee-killing
pesticides in garden plants.
Imagine what more we can do for the bees! But we’ve got to act fast, before
these beautiful and iconic pollinators disappear forever.
