Dear Revealer,
This week's episode of Reveal takes you inside our chilling investigation about a company many of us use: Amazon. Amazon reaches you fast – offering delivery of endless products to your doorstep in one or two days – or even the same day. The ease and economics of Amazon have made using the company almost unavoidable for many people. But this convenience comes with a cost.
Amazon's famous speed and technological innovation have driven the company’s massive global expansion. It’s also helped make Amazon the nation’s second-largest private employer and its CEO, Jeff Bezos, one of the richest people on Earth. But the true toll on workers of this drive to get ever bigger and faster has been hidden behind the click-and-buy process.
Drawing on internal injury logs for nearly two dozen fulfillment centers across 14 states, our investigation, Behind the Smiles, has found that the company’s obsession with speed has turned its warehouses into injury mills.
Warehouse employees are being held to grueling quotas. Workers have been seriously injured. Others have lost their lives. And the administration created by Congress to ensure safe working conditions has set new guidelines that shield companies from accountability.
Investigative reporting fills the gap between what the public knows and what powerful interests are seeking to hide. Throughout history, many of the advances made in U.S. labor laws came about after journalists brought mistreatment of workers to light. We think you deserve to know about how Amazon’s workers are being treated.
Today, we need you to help us keep these companies accountable. For less than the cost of an Amazon Prime subscription, you can help fuel our reporting.
And if you needed one more reason to support our work, our FACTS shirts are available to members if you make a recurring donation of just $5 a month or more. We are offering these shirts for a limited time. It’s awesome: no logo, no advertising, just FACTS in big, bold letters.
The truth never looked so good.
We give you the facts to change the world. Please help us continue the fight to make these facts available to everyone.
Sincerely,
Christa Scharfenberg
