From Texas to Florida, we’re seeing legislatures pass anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills — on everything from sports to banning educators from discussing gender identity and sexuality in the classroom – that severely threaten the daily lives of trans folks.
These attacks are fueled by the misogyny and transphobia that’s alive and well in the Republican party.
We’ve compiled four of the most recent anti-trans attacks and pieces of legislation that have passed in the last few months in hopes of educating our communities so that we can collectively fight back:
Earlier this month, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed SB 184 into law, criminalizing healthcare providers who offer gender-affirming care to transgender youth. The law would subject doctors to 10 years in prison for providing puberty blockers and hormones to trans kids1, effectively relegating trans youth to nearly zero bodily autonomy until adulthood.
Alabama’s Governor Ivey also signed HB 322 into law this month, forcing trans children to use bathrooms of their birth sex and banning discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through fifth grade.2
In February, Texas Governor Abbott made an alarming announcement when he directed state agencies to investigate gender-affirming care for minors as “child abuse,” calling on doctors, teachers, and the general public to report the parents of trans children for prosecution.3 This announcement came as Texas Attorney General Paxton released an opinion claiming that gender-affirming care for minors “can legally constitute child abuse under several provisions” of state law.
In what has become a centerpiece of public attention in regards to anti-LGBTQ legislation, Florida recently passed what has been dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law which prohibits classroom discussion of “sexual orientation and gender identity” in order to target LGBTQ+ students, teachers, and curriculum topics.4 This forces many queer and trans kids, and kids with LGBTQ+ parents, to find themselves the targets of censorship.
These attacks put trans youth in direct fire. Trans youth already face the highest rate of youth homelessness, and Black trans women face disproportionate fatal violence. This in addition to discrimination many trans people face in employment and housing.
Alexandria believes that Trans Lives Matter, and our movement will continue fighting for trans liberation and gender equity — that means fighting for gender protections that include TLGBQ+ folks in the public and private sphere.
