John,

I grew up in Iowa in the 1970’s and 80’s. The Farm Crisis had a real
effect on my community—people filing for bankruptcy, families losing the
farms they had relied on for generations, and local businesses closing
down. My own family struggled, managing to keep our home because my dad
left farming and took a job at the local bank.

I saw firsthand the toll bankruptcy and financial hardship took on
families. Later I’d go on to law school, where I spent hours in bankruptcy
court observing again how the courts and banks treated American families.

During the foreclosure crisis, that experience would lead to my
appointment by then Attorney General Kamala Harris to be a watchdog over
Wall Street Banks. My job was to oversee a settlement that required them
to help California families get back on their feet.

All this to say, my experience outside of Washington informs my work
holding people like Chase CEO Jamie Dimon accountable during congressional
hearings, introducing legislation to lower costs for families, and drawing
attention to the issues that Americans are facing.

I first ran for Congress because I saw how special interests and those
with power were taking advantage of American families. I’m proud to
continue that work today. Thank you for being a part of our campaign and
making that work possible.
