There’s no place like home. I should know – I still reside at my childhood home in Flatbush. Being born and raised right here in Brooklyn, I’ve seen firsthand how the housing crisis has unfolded and its direct impacts on our community…so I wanted to take some time to dive into the issues here because they affect all of us.
The housing crisis was at an inflection point even before the pandemic hit. Now, rents continue to increase and eviction proceedings are still tearing families apart. Our community members deserve better.
As the makeup of our city has shifted, the impact of longstanding racial inequalities has not changed. The legacy of redlining, racism in housing policies, concentrated poverty, and lack of wealth-building opportunities for folks of color all contribute to the disproportionate impact of the housing crisis on marginalized communities.
Housing has always been a priority for me during my time in Congress. That’s why I introduced the Affordable Housing and Area Median Income Fairness Act (H.R. 4984) to help renters in Brooklyn and beyond by cutting rent in subsidized developments and calling for the reformulation of area median income on which HUD bases affordable housing costs. Furthermore, I introduced legislation that aims to block the use of facial recognition technology in federally assisted dwelling units.
While housing agencies can partially alleviate the housing crisis, they can’t do their job without the proper resources. That’s why I co-sponsored the Public Housing Emergency Response Act to reinvest in public housing and ensure that all Americans have a decent home and suitable living environment. I also introduced the Hardest Hit Housing Act to provide additional funds for various housing programs in order to ensure that folks who need rental assistance can access it.
Friends, I am your relentless advocate to ensure that Brooklyn remains affordable for everyday residents, especially low-income communities. I will continue to fight for housing justice, but I can’t do it without your help.
