Fossil Fuel Industry Faces Lawsuits for False Climate Change Information

More than two dozen cities, states, and counties are suing fossil fuel corporations seeking compensation for the damages caused by climate change.

Communities facing sea-level rise, wildfires, droughts, flooding, and severe weather events are urging Big Oil to take responsibility. Leaders of these lawsuits are citing reports that show oil companies understood the dangers of climate change decades ago but led campaigns of deception to undermine the science and confuse the public.

The lawsuits accuse more than 40 fossil fuel companies of campaigns promoting disinformation and intentionally misleading the public. Companies facing lawsuits include BP, ExxonMobil, Suncor, Shell, American Petroleum Institute, and Koch Industries.

** Biden Admin to Resume Issuing New Oil & Gas Leases on Federal Land
------------------------------------------------------------

The Dept. of the Interior (DOI) announced Friday that it will resume selling leases for oil and gas development on federal land next week, a reversal of President Joe Biden’s campaign pledge to ban such leases that comes amid soaring gas prices.

Biden had said the moratorium was needed to fight climate change when he implemented the freeze on new oil and gas leasing on federal lands in the first week of his presidency.

The DOI is shrinking the amount of federal land available for energy exploration and raising royalties for those leases. Notices for drilling leases will be available on 144,000 acres ― an 80% reduction from what was under evaluation for potential leasing.
