The data doesn't lie – when teachers run for elected office, they break barriers, challenge norms, and win . In 2018, 177 teachers ran for seats in state legislatures. Not only did a whopping 68% advance to the general election, but 43 of those teachers were elected to serve in their state capitol.
Schools are the cornerstones of our communities and teachers are at the forefront of shaping our collective future. But creating lasting change takes a village, and there’s work that needs to be done on equitable economic development, housing, affordable health care, and more. That’s why I’m running for governor: to ensure education is front and center in addressing these complex issues and to be the voice that stands up for all Maryland educators, students, and families in Annapolis.
I’ve taught history in countless classrooms, but now I need your support to help me make history by winning this election. If you can, please pitch in $100, $10, or even just $1 to help me become Maryland’s first Black governor – and the first ever educator of color elected to statewide office.

Education can be the difference between life and death, and I know that because that’s what happened to me. After both my parents passed away, I had a very hard time – like many kids who experience trauma at a young age. I got in a lot of trouble to the point where I was actually kicked out of high school, and it is because of the public school teachers and school counselors who gave me a second chance that I was able to get back on track.
In fact, the public school teachers and school counselors who were there for me when I needed them most are the very reason I chose to pursue a career in education myself. Had it not been for the truly lifesaving second chance they gave me, I would never have had the opportunity to go on to serve as the 10th U. S. Secretary of Education – one of the greatest honors of my life.
Now I’m running for governor to ensure the second chances and opportunities afforded to me are possible for every Marylander. Because I know firsthand that teachers understand better than anyone how the right support from the right public institutions can play a major role in lifting up entire communities.
Will you support this teacher’s campaign for governor by making a contribution of whatever you can today?
