Feminism dominated headlines about politics and policy this week. Women were dubbed "impeachment's rock stars [ [link removed] ]," and they shaped the last debate as candidates and moderators. Carolyn Maloney marked a new milestone in Congress [ [link removed] ] when she became Chair of the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, and on Latina Equal Pay Day Wednesday, feminists pushed the EEOC do better to close the wage gap and protect women of color from workplace discrimination. [ [link removed] ]

In the wake of Wednesday's groundbreaking debate, the notion of "women's issues" came front and center. In pieces this week by our expert contributors, they called for more focus on women's economic justice [ [link removed] ], urged feminists to take the Census seriously and demanded an end to the so-called "debate" on women's reproductive freedom [ [link removed] ].

Our reporting this week also went far beyond the debate stage or Capitol Hill. In the midst of all this, we heard from the state lawmakers who went to El Salvador on a fact-finding mission about abortion bans [ [link removed] ], took on T.I. [ [link removed] ] and looked back on 25 years of the fight for global women's rights [ [link removed] ].

Now more than ever, women are shaping the conversation about the issues that impact our lives. It's about time-but each milestone is also a reminder of just how far we have left to go in the fight for equality. One thing, though, is certain:" Ms." will be here to chronicle what comes next.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney was elected Chair of the House Oversight Committee Wednesday in a caucus-wide vote, making history as the first woman to ever hold the position. Maloney has represented her district, including much of New York City, for 14 terms, and is a feminist champion known, among other reasons, for her leadership in the fights to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and build a National Women's History Museum. In her new post, she will take the reigns of one of the most powerful committees in Congress, and play a pivotal role in the unfolding Trump impeachment probe.

*What Wednesday Meant for Latina Women [ [link removed] ]*


Wednesday was Latina Equal Pay Day-the day that the average Latina worker must work in this calendar year to catch up with what their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts made by the end of the previous year alone. It also marked another occurrence: The U.S. EEOC held a public hearing to determine whether it will roll back or weaken current pay data collection requirements for employers, making it even easier for employers to underpay Latina and other workers without being detected.
