Heritage Action in the News
On Impeachment: Jessica Anderson wrote in USA Today <[link removed]> that Ambassador Sondland “dropped bombs while also defusing them” during his testimony and that what firsthand information Sondland did have “confirmed the opposite of the impeachment narrative.” Anderson continues:
Ambassador Sondland’s testimony was not damning. What’s damning is that three-quarters of Americans disapprove of Congress’ performance, yet Democrats refuse to do their jobs by funding the government, passing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal or protecting the border. That’s the real scandal.
On the National Debt: Tim Chapman sat down with Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) on the Freedom Caucus Podcast <[link removed]> to discuss the growing national debt, which recently crossed the $23 trillion threshold. Rep. Hice also had a lot of good things to say about Heritage Action Sentinels. Be sure to give it a listen <[link removed]>.

On Huawei and the Race to 5G: In an important national security win, the FCC unanimously voted on Friday to block US telecoms from using federal funds to buy equipment from Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE. Tim Chapman wrote on the growing national security threat from these companies in CNN Business <[link removed]>:
For decades, Western markets have turned a blind eye to unfair trade practices, human rights abuses and severe security concerns in order to get the latest tech at the lowest prices. But the Trump administration has taken a strong stance on these issues while holding Beijing accountable for its wrongful actions. The FCC should continue in that vein by protecting our information highway from the risk of capture by a hostile nation.

Sentinels Taking Action
Last week <[link removed]>, our grassroots team was busy! One of our Regional Coordinators, Melody Clarke, met with North Carolina Young Republicans for a productive luncheon. Representatives Ted Budd (R-N.C.) and Mark Walker (R-N.C.) joined the group for an update from Washington.

New Funding Deadline: December 20
This week, the House and Senate passed another continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown and keep funding at 2019 levels through December 20.

This sets up a big spending vote right before Christmas which is bad for conservatives. Historically, this has led to spending bills that are full of bloat and liberal policies.

Before the vote, Tim Chapman explained <[link removed]> the many ways that Congress continues to fail the American people:
In this year’s appropriations process, Congress has only managed to raise the debt ceiling, increase spending by $324 billion, and repeatedly break their promise to fund the government through regular order. No wonder three-quarters of Americans disapprove of Congress’s job performance.

Continuing resolutions are bad governance. They prevent government departments — including the U.S. military — from properly budgeting for the full fiscal year, wasting massive amounts of time and money. The American people are right to demand better from their elected representatives.

Instead of punting hard decisions a month forward, Congress should work to pass appropriations bills and keep their promise to refuse any major policy riders or poison pills.
