Federal Judge Overturns Mask Mandate for All Public Transportation

As travelers breathe a sigh of relief. National Review: A federal judge in Florida overturned the Biden administration’s national transportation mask mandate on Monday, determining that the CDC overstepped its authority by requiring masks on planes, trains, buses, and other forms of public transportation. The order handed down by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle holds that the CDC’s masking requirement violated the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) because it was implemented “without allowing public participation through the APA’s notice and comment procedures” (National Review). Ed Morrissey: Will the Biden administration appeal this ruling? Probably, but they’d be well advised to skip it. Mask mandates have become a political millstone around the necks of Democrats already. This gives the White House a very convenient exit from endless loops of low-risk-tolerance extensions. Mostly, though, the Supreme Court has already plowed most of the ground Mizelle does here in recognizing the limits of the CDC’s authority. Why fight it and fail at the precise moment when it’s better to just admit that the time for such measures has passed anyway (HotAir)?

Apprehensions at Southern Border in March Reach Biden Administration High

From the story: The Border Patrol reported nearly 210,000 apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border in March, making it the most chaotic month on the border so far in President Biden’s tenure. The numbers were submitted as part of an ongoing court case over border enforcement and the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy, which a court has ordered the Biden team to revive (Washington Times). The Washington Examiner: The number of encounters rose by nearly 60,000 from February’s 165,000, as rumors spread that the Biden administration would stop immediately returning illegal immigrants in the coming months. The administration later announced a May end date to Title 42, the pandemic policy for turning away all migrants crossing the border illegally (Washington Examiner). Julio Rosas: The city of McAllen issued a statement to President Joe Biden imploring him to not lift Title 42 on May 23 as it is expected there will be an even bigger influx of illegal crossings than what the Rio Grande Valley has been facing since last year (Townhall).

Biden Brings Back Wealth Tax

It’s still a horrible idea. From the story: The Treasury Department recently released its explanation of the administration’s FY 2023 revenue proposals. The so-called Green Book lays out exactly how the administration proposes to raise $1.628 billion in new taxes over the next ten years. In addition to raising the corporate-tax rate to 28 percent and pushing the top personal income-tax rate to 39.5 percent, the proposal creates what effectively amounts to a wealth tax. Treasury claims that the new tax will raise $239.5 billion in revenue over the next decade (National Review). Ronna McDaniel: Today is Democrats’ favorite holiday – tax day. This year it’s not just the IRS coming for your paycheck, Biden’s inflation tax is negatively impacting every American (Twitter).

Russia Regroups and Initiates Battle in the East

Forbes: Russia has “begun the battle for Donbas,” Zelensky said in an address Monday night, adding that a “very large part of the entire Russian army is now focused” on the region. Russian forces attempted to break through the Ukrainian frontlines around Donetsk and Luhansk, which collectively make up the Donbas region, but could only break through the lines at two points, Ukrainian Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said (Forbes). From New York Post: After Russian forces failed to take Kyiv last month, the Kremlin announced it was refocusing its efforts on taking the Donbas, while continuing to shell the whole of Ukraine (New York Post). From Reuters: Russia’s reinforcements have set the stage for a protracted battle that military analysts say is certain to inflict heavy losses on both sides as the Russians try to encircle Ukraine’s fighters dug in to defend the Donbas region (Reuters).

Iran Warns Israel: Will Target Military Units Over “Tiniest” Move Against Them

From the story: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Monday warned that Israel will be targeted by his country’s armed forces if it makes “the tiniest move” against Iran. Raisi addressed Israel directly during a speech at an annual parade of Iran’s armed forces. “If you make the tiniest move against the nation of Iran, the center of the Zionist regime will be the target of our armed forces,” Raisi said, referring to Tel Aviv (Times of Israel). Fox News: He spoke as talks stalled in Vienna amid President Biden’s attempt to resurrect former President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. While Obama and Biden stated that their deals aim to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, critics like former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Ron Dermer have claimed that the Biden deal would put Iran on a glide path to nuclear weapons. Reporting surfaced last month that the U.S. may consider removing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard from its list of designated terrorist groups in exchange for regional peace (Fox News).

Congresswoman Cori Bush Has Spent Over $300K on Private Security While Pushing to Defund the Police

From the story: Congresswoman Cori Bush reportedly spent more than $300,000 on armed security since 2021 despite demanding police departments across the United States are “defunded” in the name of racial justice. The radical Representative previously defended her use of private security, blaming the armed guards on death threats and other issues with her personal safety (The First). From The Daily Wire: Bush supports “defund the police” despite pressure from other Democrats. Bush told Axios in February that she has had “colleagues walk up to me” and say “defund the police” does not help in their districts. The lawmaker did not name to whom she was referring (Daily Wire). Steve Cortes: Rep @CoriBush on her private security: “I’m gonna make sure I have security” “So suck it up, and defunding the police has to happen” (Twitter).

Assistant Principal in Virginia Forced to Resign After Being Bullied for Questioning Anti-Racism Training

From the story: Emily Mais, a former employee at Agnor-Hurt Elementary School in Albemarle County, Virginia, filed a lawsuit against the school district Thursday, accusing it of maintaining a racially hostile work environment against her after she expressed reservations regarding a series of teacher development training programs that incorporated critical race theory (Washington Examiner). Alliance Defending Freedom: Mais served as an elementary art teacher for seven years before moving into administrative roles in 2012. Albemarle County School District officials constructively discharged her by creating a hostile environment where they repeatedly dismissed her complaints; as a result, Mais felt compelled to resign from her role as assistant principal in September 2021 (ADF).

Apple quietly rolled out a new iPhone update in mid-March, which included a “pregnant man” and a number of gender neutral emojis to cater to the leftist LGBT agenda. Air Force Reservist to Be Punished for Not Getting Vaccinated

From the story: The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the Pentagon can take disciplinary action against a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve who refused to follow the Pentagon’s COVID vaccine mandate due to religious objections. Jonathan Dunn had said he sought emergency relief to protect himself from “further punishment, including a discharge.” He was removed from his command after he refused the vaccine believing it violates his faith (Axios). From The Hill: The Defense Department last week urged the justices to deny the request, emphasizing the need for military readiness while arguing that Dunn had failed to demonstrate that he would suffer irreversible harm if his bid were denied (The Hill).
