Yes, it’s true. A ProPublica report found that the 25 richest Americans pay a true tax rate of only 3.4%. By contrast, the median American household pays 14%.
This is dangerous for two reasons.
One, it worsens income inequality, which destabilizes society. We now have greater income inequality in the US than we did during the Gilded Age.
Two, it allows billionaires to accumulate so much money that they can buy politicians and legislation with it. Money has so corrupted Congress that seats on committees are even for sale.
Yes, we need to repeal Citizens United — and we also need to tax the rich so they simply don’t have enough money to buy seats on committees for their Congressional puppets anymore.
