Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our last Monday Nature Mystery, Sarah MayhewPlease email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]

Congratulations to Sarah for correctly identifying the Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon). According to the Virginia Herpetological Society, this commonly encountered species is sometimes mistaken for the venomous Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin, which does not occur in northern Virginia. The Northern Watersnake eats mostly fish and amphibians. While many snake species lay eggs, the Northern Watersnake gives birth to live young, often 20 per litter, but sometimes up to 50.
