John – I want to update you on the situation in Louisiana, one of the last states to adopt congressional maps:
• First, legislative Republicans passed a gerrymandered map that ignored the voices of Black Louisianans.
• Then, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards – whose election we supported – vetoed the map!
• But a couple of weeks ago, Republicans in the legislature overrode the veto.
Tweet from the NDRC: It’s an absolute disgrace that the first vote to override a Louisiana governor’s veto in 29 years came at the expense of the state’s Black communities. This vote is a direct assault on Louisianans’ right to equal representation and will forever be a stain on the LA Legislature.

This isn’t over. Voters are challenging the Louisiana map in court under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, noting that while African Americans make up 33% of Louisiana’s population, only one of the six districts drawn by Republicans – or 17% – is majority-Black. It’s part of a pattern of gerrymandering that’s been repeated state after state.
