Last year, Republicans in the Texas legislature passed SB8, and Governor Abbott signed it into law. SB8 bans abortions in Texas after six weeks, a near-total abortion ban. But this disgusting law doesn’t stop there. It puts a bounty on women and health care providers in our state.
Now, Oklahoma has passed one of the harshest anti-abortion laws this country has ever seen. The bill makes it a felony to perform or attempt to perform an abortion, carrying a sentence of up to ten years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Because of SB8, women in Texas were forced to travel to nearby states to obtain safe abortions, with nearly half of all Texans who got out-of-state abortions between September and December going to Oklahoma. That option has now been taken from them. These two laws fly in the face of nearly 50 years of settled law and put an undue burden on Texans making decisions about their own bodies.
We saw the dangerous effects of SB8 a few weeks ago when a hospital staff turned a Texas woman over to the authorities who charged her with attempted murder for allegedly seeking an abortion. Only after the case received national attention and because of the hard work of local organizations and reproductive rights advocacy groups, the charges were finally dropped. But this was a frightening glimpse into our post-Roe future if we don’t act.
As a civil rights attorney and now in Congress, Colin has fought for years to protect every American’s constitutional rights, including a woman’s right to choose. He will continue doing so, but he needs your help to protect our extremely slim House Majority. This is a critical moment, so if you can, please contribute to Colin’s re-election today.
