Friend: It's impossible to overstate what a privilege it was watching Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson make history as the first Black woman to be confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. From the brilliance and perseverance she displayed in front of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, to her unparalleled legal record and commitment to justice, the United States will be better when Judge Jackson takes her place on our highest court.
As profound a moment as this confirmation was, it was also a solemn reminder as to why Democratic control of the Senate is beyond crucial: Republican obstructionism and extremist rhetoric was on full display.
First, I watched Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham – along with the likes of Sens. Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and Tom Cotton – berate Judge Jackson, constantly interrupting her and misrepresenting her judicial record and philosophy.
Sen. Graham, who voted to confirm Judge Jackson to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals only one year ago, sunk to a new level of disrespect by storming out of the committee hearing. He would go on to say that if Republicans controlled the Senate, that Judge Jackson "would not have been before this committee."
Finally, Mitch McConnell and nearly his entire caucus voted against this historic and highly qualified nominee. In an interview, McConnell took things even further, refusing to commit to holding hearings for another Biden nominee if Republicans were to take back control of the Senate.
Friend, the Republican Party has descended into a party consumed by extremism, obstruction, and blind loyalty to Donald Trump. We must not allow Mitch McConnell to retake Senate control.
But with Democrats' 50-50 majority, he only needs to flip one seat to do it – and polls show Republicans gaining momentum. I'm up against Trumpist opponents and the millions of dollars that the GOP Senate campaign arm has just raised to bankroll their efforts. That means I need your grassroots support to protect this seat and defend Democratic control of the Senate. So please: Will you donate $5 or more now so we have the resources to keep this seat blue and expand Democratic Senate control?
