John, some of you may remember Mayor Ed Gainey as our endorsed BTE candidate in the General Election but for those of you who are new, let us introduce you!
Mayor Ed Gainey is Pittsburgh’s first ever Black mayor. He previously represented the 24th State House district, which includes parts of the City’s East End neighborhoods. He beat an entrenched Democratic incumbent mayor in the 2021 Primary election, and in November 2021, he went on to defeat the Republican nominee, Tony Moreno in the General.
We are coming to you today not only to talk about Mayor Gainey’s work in office, but also as a former Barrier To Entry Candidate. Being a BTE endorsed candidate really resonated with Mayor Gainey. Growing up, he saw firsthand the economic hardships his family, friends, and neighbors faced. He was raised by a single mother who couldn’t afford to send him to high school, and college was not even a thought that crossed his mind. Mayor Gainey relied heavily on his community to help build a stable life for himself. With the support of his community and a hell of a lot of hard work, he got through high school and college.
Early on in college he recognized that he had a passion for uplifting working people in communities and cities— cities like Pittsburgh. When working as a State Representative, he found his voice to fight injustice and uplift the communities in Pittsburgh and he knew he had to continue this work. Today, he continues to fulfill that work as Mayor.
Since being in office, he has made it his life's mission to build back a better community that he could be proud to say his children grew up in. Not only for his children, but for as many children and working families as he could reach. Mayor Gainey is fully devoted to making sure the next generation has a safe and opportunistic future ahead of them.
Take a look at some of Mayor Ed Gainey’s latest accomplishments in office:
This work is why being a BTE candidate resonated with Mayor Gainey— because he can lift others up through his role as an elected official and as a leader in Democratic politics. Mayor Gainey, along with BTE PAC, is committed to fighting for affordable housing, safety in communities, living wage and benefits, and so much more.
Here at Barrier To Entry PAC, we are laser focused on giving individuals from low income backgrounds resources to run strong campaigns to advocate for opportunity and equality in their communities, and that is exactly why we are thrilled to support Pittsburgh’s new Mayor.
