"We want to outlaw abortion in the state of Oklahoma."
Friend -- that's what the Republican Governor of Oklahoma said as he signed a near-total abortion ban into law last week. It's despicable.
Oklahoma's abortion ban makes abortion illegal, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Doctors who provide abortions in Oklahoma can face up to 10 years in prison, and people will have nowhere to turn for care. They sure can't go down to neighboring Texas, where a 26-year-old woman just spent several days in jail on a charge of "self-induced abortion."
Oklahoma is just one of the states that destroyed abortion rights this week. Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed an abortion ban into law too. And in Kentucky, the Republican legislature forced through an near-total ban on abortion.
These attacks are only getting worse, and we need the federal government to take action. Please, sign my petition calling for federal legislation to protect the right to abortion in all 50 states.
This summer will be a pivotal moment for reproductive rights in the U.S. The Supreme Court is set to rule on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case that will test the constitutionality of another state's abortion ban -- Mississippi's.
And with Trump-appointed justices like Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett forming a conservative majority, it's very possible that the court will overturn 50 years of precedent set by Roe v. Wade.
Anti-choice activists have been working for 50 years to overturn Roe, and this is the moment they've been waiting for. We need to enshrine abortion protections in federal law immediately, so please take action with me today.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
Chuck Schumer
