Dear John,

The Senate Judiciary Committee will likely take up the nomination of Nancy Abudu next week! As you know, Ms. Abudu is the strategic litigation director for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a corrupt organization known for targeting its political opponents with its "hate group" label and dangerous rhetoric. Choosing to work for such an organization shows a lack of judgment that makes her unsuitable for the federal bench.

Will you take a moment right now to tell your senators to oppose Nancy Abudu's nomination?

The SPLC was connected in federal court to domestic terrorism because their "hate group" designation and dangerous rhetoric inspired a troubled young man to attempt mass murder here at FRC. Fortunately, he was unsuccessful, and no one was killed, although he did shoot and wound our unarmed building manager who subdued him. We remain listed as a "hate group" and our policy positions remain mischaracterized on their website, despite repeated requests for an apology and correction.

In 2018, the SPLC paid a $3.4 million settlement for labeling Maajid Nawaz, a British political activist, as an "anti-Muslim extremist." The organization was also compelled to issue an official apology for placing Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson on its "extremist watch list" in 2014.

Such blatant disregard for the First Amendment rights of political opponents disqualifies any employee of the SPLC from holding a judicial appointment. The SPLC holds itself out as a champion of civil rights, but former staff have detailed rampant internal racism and sexism within the organization's highest ranks. One whistleblower described the organization as having "a pervasive racist culture and an environment in which a woman is not seen or heard."

These whistleblowers coming forward resulted in the firing of the SPLC's co-founder, Morris Dees, and several other high-level officials in 2019, right around the time that Abudu was hired.

Ms. Abudu's acceptance of a job at such a corrupt and discriminatory organization is unacceptable. The true nature of the SPLC was easily knowable to her when she accepted the position. Furthermore, her failure to distance herself from the SPLC's dangerous rhetoric should disqualify her among fair-minded observers from having the capacity to serve on the bench as an impartial jurist.

Please reach out now to tell your senators and ask them to oppose Nancy Abudu's nomination!

Sincerely,

Your Friends at FRC Action
