Tell your senators there's action to take now.
ACLU Supporter –
This upcoming Wednesday is 4/20 and it couldn't be a more critical time to take action for marijuana legalization that is equitable for all of us. <[link removed]>
As a quick reminder:
* The failed War on Drugs has deepened racial injustice, shattered neighborhoods, and decimated communities for over 50 years. In sum: It's bullshit.
* While marijuana use is roughly equal among Black and white people, Black people are 3.73 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.
* Eighteen states and D.C. have already legalized marijuana, yet these extreme racial disparities persist – and communities of color have not benefited from legalization.
But legislation – like the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act that just passed in the House – can tackle these racial disparities head-on. And now, it's time for the Senate to follow suit. Join us by sending a message to your senators in support of justice-oriented marijuana legalization that includes similar racial and social justice measures now. <[link removed]>
Take Action <[link removed]>
ACLU Supporter, we need to use the momentum we have from the House to ensure our senators act as quickly as possible.
I'll be clear: Equitable legalization measures like the MORE Act will have a positive impact on millions of people whose lives have been upended by the failed and racist War on Drugs. That means legislation that not only decriminalizes marijuana at the federal level – but also redresses the disparate harm caused by criminalization by expunging federal marijuana convictions, investing in communities harmed by the War on Drugs, and prohibiting immigration penalties and other federal penalties based on marijuana.
For 4/20, let's make just marijuana legalization happen once and for all: Send your message today. <[link removed]>
