Dear John, I am immensely proud to be a member of the Organizing Committee for the Amazon Labor Union — the first union at Amazon in U.S history. I am also proud to support the efforts and solidarity of People’s World and to reach out to you to join me in supporting People’s World. I am especially appealing to young workers to join me in donating. Here’s why: People’s World represents the struggle of all working class people fighting against capitalism and the forces of corporate power. Long before the corporate press took the efforts of the Amazon Labor Union seriously, People’s World maintained a powerful presence supporting the ALU, publishing articles exposing racist and exploitative conditions at the Amazon warehouse and spotlighting our unionization drive. We need media that does not simply support us when we have been victorious; we need media that supports us when we are at the start of these decisive struggles against corporate power. At the heart of this union are my fellow young workers. We are aware that it is our essential labor that makes possible the accumulation of wealth for billionaire capitalists like Jeff Bezos. This consciousness has had a concrete effect for all young people organizing against capitalist oppression. We see it in the successful unionization of the 8,000-worker JFK8 facility and the expected victory at the end of this month at the 1600-worker LDJ5 facility, both here on Staten Island. Only two years ago, on May 1, 2020, Amazon workers Chris Smalls, Derrick Palmer, Gerald Bryson, and Jordan Flowers created The Congress of Essential Workers - TCOEW. In the midst of the pandemic, they were responding to dangerous health conditions and extreme exploitation. TCOEW eventually became the Amazon Labor Union. With many young people seeing a strong working class movement made up of working class youth, they feel inspired to continue to join these movements in other workplaces, including service industries and healthcare. In People’s World, readers learned that support from organizations such as the Young Communist League and the Communist Party USA has been central to the ALU’s unionization effort. It was People’s World that reported that during the five weeks of intensive phone banking leading up to the JFK8 election, members and friends from the Young Communist League and Communist Party called thousands of workers to discuss the benefits of unionizing in addition to attending rallies in solidarity with workers fighting for higher wages, paid time off (PTO), and personal protective equipment (PPE). The ALU movement has inspired our Young Communist League. Young people are joining the YCL, inspired by the young workers in Staten Island organizing against economic exploitation. They are actively re-forming youth leagues across the country. Members of the YCL are also joining the workforce at Amazon warehouses across the country in order to be part of our generation’s historic contribution to the working class movement. Already the Amazon Labor Union struggle has spread to more than one hundred warehouses and counting. This is just the beginning! Solidarity, Justine Medina Amazon Labor Union Organizer & NY-YCL Co-chair P.S. I encourage young people to join me in donating to our working class publication which has supported young workers within the unionization drive and continues to commit to radical movements all over the world. People’s World is the newspaper that represents the power of the working class, and I hope everyone will support People’s World in its drive toward $75,000 before May Day. I’m giving $25. Will you join me? |
