Ukrainian Official: Mariupol has Been Wiped Off the Face of the Earth
From the story: As Russia appears poised to capture Mariupol more than six weeks into the invasion, the governor of Ukraine’s Donetsk region said Friday that while Ukrainian troops remain in control of the strategic port city, Mariupol “has been wiped off the face of the earth” by Russian forces ( Washington Post). From The Hill: Russia has besieged the city on the Sea of Azov since the beginning of the invasion on Feb. 24. Mariupol has seen some of the worst attacks and casualties of the war, including the death of at least 300 people after a theater was bombed and a strike against a maternity hospital. The mayor of the city estimated this week that more than 10,000 civilians have died in Mariupol since the siege began and that corpses have “carpeted the streets” ( The Hill). Anastasiia Lapatina: #Mariupol before Russia / after Russia ( Twitter). From Fox News: Advisor to the Mariupol city mayor warned Saturday that Russian troops are preparing to shut down the city by April 18 and will “filter” all men for forced service, labor or “isolation” ( Fox News).

Russia Issues Threats of “Unpredictable Consequences” if the U.S. Keeps Arming Ukraine
Washington Post: Russia this week sent a formal diplomatic note to the United States warning that U.S. and NATO shipments of the “most sensitive” weapons systems to Ukraine were “adding fuel” to the conflict there and could bring “unpredictable consequences” ( Washington Post). The diplomatic note, dated Tuesday, was delivered in the same week that President Biden announced $800 million in additional military aid to Ukraine, including heavy weapons and Soviet-made Mi-17 helicopters. The Kremlin also accused NATO and the US of violating “rigorous principles” regarding the transport of weapons into conflict zones, saying there was a threat of “high-precision weapons falling into the hands of radical nationalists, extremists and bandit forces in Ukraine.” Russia also accused NATO of hindering peace negotiations between the Kremlin and Ukraine “in order to continue the bloodshed” and alleged that Washington had been pressuring other nations to cease military and technical cooperation with Russia ( New York Post).

Twitter Moves Forward With “Poison Pill” to Halt Elon Musk Takeover
Wall Street Journal Reports: Twitter moved to prevent Elon Musk from significantly increasing his stake, a day after he unveiled a $43 billion unsolicited takeover bid for the social-media company. Poison pills, also called shareholder-rights plans, are legal maneuvers that make it hard for shareholders to build their stakes beyond a set point by triggering an option for others to buy more shares at a discount. Invented by famed corporate lawyer Martin Lipton in 1982, they are often used by companies that receive hostile takeover bids to block an unwanted suitor or buy time to consider their options. In the case of Twitter’s pill, should Mr. Musk or anyone else take control of 15% or more of Twitter’s shares, all other shareholders would gain the right to purchase additional shares for what would effectively be half-price. That would quickly dilute Mr. Musk’s stake and make buying more shares expensive ( Wall Street Journal).

ACLU Sues to Have Inmates Imprisoned by Gender Identity, Two Inmates End Up Pregnant
From the story: Last year, a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) settled a lawsuit in New Jersey that led to convicted criminals being incarcerated in prisons that match their “gender identity” instead of their biological sex. And now, two women in the prison are pregnant, officials have confirmed. The women were not identified, and it is not clear if they were impregnated by one or more of the 27 “transgender women” who are housed in the state’s only all-women’s prison ( Breitbart). Richard Hanania: ACLU sues New Jersey to get prison inmates housed by their “gender identity.” Now two female prisoners are pregnant ( Twitter). From The Daily Mail: Edna Mahan began housing transgender inmates in July 2021, as the result of a lawsuit filed in 2019 by a transgender woman who said she was forced to live in men’s prisons for a year and a half. The policy also offers greater protections for transgender, intersex and nonbinary people in state prisons, most importantly by housing them based on the gender they identify with rather than by sex assigned at birth. Inmates can provide information about their gender identity at any time during their incarceration, under the policy ( Daily Mail).

Washington Free Beacon: Gov. Kay Ivey (R.) signed a bill into law last week that makes Alabama the third state to ban children from receiving hormone therapy and puberty blockers. The legislation, however, is already in jeopardy. The Biden Justice Department in March warned state attorneys general against enforcing hormone-treatment bans for minors, saying they run afoul of federal anti-discrimination laws. Liberal legal groups including the American Civil Liberties Union promised this week to “use the full force of the law” to challenge the Alabama legislation in court—a move that blocked a similar law in Arkansas last year ( Washington Free Beacon). Daily Mail: A top trans psychologist who has helped hundreds of teens transition has warned it has ‘gone too far’ amid fears many youngsters are making life-changing decisions because it is ‘trendy.’ Dr Erica Anderson, who has worked as a clinical psychologist in the US for 30 years, has raised concerns that the rise in trans or non-binary children is the result of peer pressure. The 71-year-old, who is transgender, said clinicians are failing to carry out thorough mental health evaluations before recommending hormones or surgeries to teenagers ( Daily Mail).
