John,
A bill that would federally decriminalize the use of cannabis is headed to the House floor.
The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2019, or MORE Act, passed committee yesterday. The bill aims to remove marijuana from a list of federally controlled substances and puts legislation in the hands of the states. It also requires federal courts to expunge prior convictions for marijuana-related offenses.
The War on Drugs has disproportionately impacted people of color for decades, and it’s time to pass legislation that addresses these issues head on.
This bill also includes a 5% tax aimed at establishing a trust fund for programs geared toward job training and substance abuse treatment.
We can celebrate the fact that the House is FINALLY taking steps to address this issue. But the fact remains, until more progressive leaders are elected to BOTH the House and the Senate, most House bills will never make it to the Senate floor.
That’s why our movement at Brand New Congress is mounting support for dozens of House AND Senate candidates in 2020! We have three powerhouse female Senate candidates looking to unseat three Trumpian Republicans. They need all the help they can get to build their statewide campaigns and beat the corporate partisan machine.
This is a movement built on hard work, small-dollar donations and thousands of volunteers organizing across the country. Contribute just $10 today and join our movement to help us curb the tides of social and racial injustice and send those injustices to the dustbin of history.
In solidarity,
Zeynab Day
