How an atheist led the charge against an abortion ban.

John -

I have a heartening story to share from Nebraska.

A few years ago, the Center for Freethought Equality endorsed Megan Hunt, an atheist, and an incredibly thoughtful and compelling candidate, for state senate in Nebraska. We were thrilled when she won her seat in 2018.

Last week, Hunt led the filibuster in the state legislature against a bill that would ban abortion. She argued passionately, saying:

“It should worry us, colleagues, and it should worry us Nebraskans how often we have to debate human rights and dignity, and how we have conceded that there’s a debate to even have. The fact that my reproductive destiny, that my fertility, that my rights to control my own body and every other woman in this chamber is even up for debate is something I can’t believe we have conceded as a culture.”

Thanks to her leadership, she successfully blocked the abortion ban. And she did it in a red state that voted for President Trump, where public opinion on the right to an abortion is split evenly.

If you want more secular candidates like Megan Hunt in positions of power across our government, then I ask you to support our work during this critical midterm election year.

Even a contribution of $10, $15, or $25 will make an important impact as we identify and recruit more atheist and humanist champions like Hunt to run for office, and stand up for human rights and dignity.
