  • Moving Past Politics: How States Are Leading on Immigrant and Refugee Inclusion

While much of today’s immigration debate is laser-focused on the U.S.-Mexico border, states across the country are increasingly creating their own policies that affect the day-to-day lives of millions of immigrants and refugees. Some states like Florida are pursuing restrictive measures that sow fear and uncertainty. But many others are doing the opposite: they are rolling out the welcome mat and investing in immigrant and refugee inclusion by creating a statewide Office of New Americans (ONA). Read More »

  • What is President Biden’s Plan for Ending Title 42?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in early April that it would end Title 42, the pandemic border policy that allowed immigration officials to rapidly “expel” migrants over 1.7 million times. TPS is a temporary immigration status provided to nationals of certain countries experiencing an ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions.

This fact sheet from the American Immigration Council discusses TPS, the benefits the foreign nationals receive, and its limitations.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I am here today with one clear message: Title 42 has failed. One statistic most obviously demonstrates Title 42’s failure. Since Title 42 went into effect, the Border Patrol expelled a staggering 94 percent of single adult migrants it encountered who were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador. If Title 42 were a successful deterrent, we would expect such a near total shutdown of the border to lead to declining apprehension numbers."
