I am writing to urge you to support the ballot access drive to put Matthew Hoh on the North Carolina ballot as the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate.

Matt needs 14,000 good signatures by May 15. That means at least 25,000 signatures to be safe from challenge. It takes money to pay petitioners to make sure Matt gets the signatures he needs.

At this time of war and growing militarism while climate protection and the people’s needs are neglected, I think Matt’s campaign is the most important Green Party campaign this year 

Matt came to national prominence as a voice for peace and democracy in 2009 when he resigned from his State Department post in Afghanistan in protest over President Obama’s “surge” that escalated the US war in Afghanistan. Matt spoke up from experience as a former Marine Corps officer who had done two tours of duty in Iraq. His powerful resignation letter was recognized as an “Essential Document” on the war in Afghanistan by the Council on Foreign Relations. 

The first issue that Matt’s policy platform addresses is the democracy crisis our nation faces. The extremist Republicans are passing laws in many states to restrict voting rights and take over election administration in order to steal elections. The feckless Democrats have failed to lift the Senate filibuster in order to pass federal voting rights and election protection legislation that would pre-empt the Republicans' anti-democratic state laws. 

Beneath this immediate democracy crisis is the anti-democratic system of single-member-district, winner-take-all elections that has long crippled our democracy by systematically excluding political minorities from their proportional share representation in legislative bodies. Matt addresses these problems with a pro-democracy agenda that features reforms that neither major party is supporting, including Fair Ballot Access, Ranked-Choice Voting, and Proportional Representation. 

Matt will be the only candidate in his race campaigning for a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, a livable minimum wage, student and medical debt forgiveness, treating drug abuse as a health problem instead of a criminal problem, ending US wars overseas, nuclear disarmament, and many other popular progressive policies that the politicians of the major parties do not support because they pander to the special interests of the super-rich and the giant corporations who have bought and paid for their campaigns and political careers.
