John,

Before I log off to celebrate Passover with my family, I want to tell you a story – and by the end, I hope you’ll consider chipping in $5 or whatever you can to get me back on track for my April fundraising goal.

My faith is very important to me – during the Iraq war while serving as commander aboard the USS Enterprise, I organized a Seder to feel closer to home, my family, and my friends.

During a holiday we were all used to celebrating with our families, only three inches of steel separated those of us in the chapel of the ship from the jets being deployed above.

And when the servicemembers on the deck are launching and recovering jets three inches above your head, you don’t just hear it, you feel it.

But despite the circumstances, I wanted to create a sense of family and community for my crew on such a sacred day. About a dozen of us managed to establish that.

We read the Haggadah and received care packages of matzo and gefilte fish. It certainly wasn’t a traditional Seder, but we prepared the meal as closely as possible to what would be served back home.

Nearly 16 years later, I still think about that Seder. Servicemembers of all faiths and backgrounds coming together to find a moment of celebration during an incredibly difficult time.

And I hope your Seder this year feels like a respite from the chaos of the last few years. But unfortunately, I can’t take a break from campaigning.

VA-02 is the most competitive House district in the country, and my opponent just received an endorsement that will lead to a huge influx of contributions for her.

So, John, before you log off for your much-deserved celebration, will you chip in $5 or whatever you can to help defend my seat from a far-right Republican that would only further the chaos we’ve experienced the last few years?
