The giving landscape in the US is complex and multiform, encompassing formal and informal modes of giving. Recently, researchers have begun to focus more attention on that variety, highlighting how new forms of giving—and older forms that have attracted more scrutiny—are reshaping notions of generosity.
A new interactive dashboard developed by Urban Institute’s philanthropy experts provides an overview of the expansive giving landscape by compiling data from multiple sources to spotlight emerging generosity trends. The Giving Dashboard,
which will be regularly updated, brings together research on donations to tax-exempt nonprofits and crowdfunding, political giving and impact investing, giving through donor-advised funds and giving with digital currency, and on remittance giving and volunteering, among other categories. Within these categories, it features indicators that show how giving behaviors have changed during the latest year for which data are available.
