Political pundits are calling the Republican primary field for the Pennsylvania governor’s race crowded, and they’re absolutely right. It’s crowded with climate change deniers and conspiracy followers who continue to champion the baseless claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Take State Senator Doug Mastriano, a chief peddler of conspiracy theories who not only attended the January 6th insurrection and got subpoenaed by Congress for his involvement, but also funded chartered buses and supplies for the attack with his own campaign contributions.

We can’t allow someone like Mastriano to become the most important political voice in our state. We need real leaders like Josh Shapiro who will call out the dangerous lies that undermine our democracy and fight to protect our voting rights in Pennsylvania, in addition to our drinking water, clean air, and open spaces.

We’re gearing up to knock on doors, make phone calls, and run digital ads across the state in support of Shaprio this election season, but we need EVERYONE who cares about a healthy democracy and a healthy environment to chip in and help.

Doug Mastriano isn’t the only candidate we’re worried about. Among the crowded field are flip floppers who take money from the fossil fuel industry, a candidate who is backed by a massive organization that doesn’t believe science and history should be taught to children, and a candidate who associates undocumented immigrants with “terrorists and drug dealers.”

And many of them champion the Big Lie — even supporting the sham election “audit” that’s costing taxpayers money and trying to obtain the private information of 9 million Pennsylvanians.

Josh Shapiro has drawn a stark contrast with these opponents, running on a platform that focuses on expanding our democracy, protecting Pennsylvania families from threats to their clean air and water, and creating good-paying union jobs in growing green industries that will speed up our state’s recovery while making our economy more competitive and sustainable.

We’re at a crossroads — climate change is making our summers hotter, our winters colder, and our weather more dangerous. As Josh’s opponents pledge to eviscerate Pennsylvania’s environmental protections in a massive corporate giveaway to the oil and gas industry that puts the safety of our families in jeopardy, we need to do everything we can to make sure not a single one of them succeeds. We need to fight for a better, greener vision for our Commonwealth — and against candidates who would put polluters and profits over people and democracy.
