This Week at CMD

This week, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) published audio we obtained from a panel at a secretive gathering in February. In the presentation, leaders from the far-right Christian Council for National Policy (CNP) outlined an astroturf election strategy for 2022, reminiscent of efforts last year in Virginia to rile up parents and convince Black voters to stay home.

Plus, we exposed a secretive family foundation that is bankrolling voter suppression efforts, and we analyzed the upcoming attorney general GOP primary in Wisconsin, where a rightwing, Koch-tied candidate is raising big money.

Here's the latest!

Christian Right to Redeploy Astroturf Strategy Used in Virginia to Win Midterms

At the February meeting of the Council for National Policy, Christian Right activists and donors got a gloating tutorial in astroturfing from rightwing operatives in Virginia who helped Republicans make big political gains there in the 2021 election.

Despite having no prosecutorial experience, a former rightwing state legislator has raised more campaign cash than both a county district attorney and a private practice lawyer competing in the Wisconsin Republican primary for attorney general.

Honest Elections Project and Heritage Foundation “Secretaries of State Conference” Invitation, April 12-14, 2022

The Center for Media and Democracy obtained this invitation for a “Secretaries of State Conference” co-hosted by The Honest Elections Project (HEP) and the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation on April 12-13, 2022.

HEP is a dark money voter suppression group formed in February 2020 by Leonard Leo‘s network. Known as Trump’s “judge whisperer,” Leo worked behind the scenes during the Trump administration to organize a rightwing takeover of the U.S. Supreme Court.
