A question I hear over and over again on the campaign trail is, "What distinguishes you from your opponents?"
The succinct answer: I'm the only candidate in this Polk County Attorney race talking about the need for significant, meaningful, major criminal justice reform.
But why do we need major justice reform?
The United States of America has more people in prisons and jails, in absolute numbers, than any other country on earth.
Not per capita - I’m talking number of people.
If the policies that led to this statistic worked, we would expect the United States to be the safest country on earth.
Spoiler alert, we are not.
The Global Peace Index which, among other things, measures public safety - puts the United States at number 122.
What we are doing isn't working, and low to middle income folks, people of color and LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately harmed by these ineffective policies.
