Dear John,

On March 31, the Network of enlightened Women chapter at American University was delighted to co-host Winsome Sears, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. She is the first female Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and the first Black female elected to statewide office in Virginia. The Lieutenant Governor shared personal stories, strategies, and advice with the students in attendance, inspiring us and motivating us to speak out as conservatives.

Leaders from NeW at American University and the College Republicans at American University with Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears and their chapter advisor Anita McBride, former Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush.
Sears reflected on the first time she identified as a conservative, sharing that she didn’t know she was conservative until the election of 1988 when she heard President George H.W. Bush present his platform. Throughout her campaign in Virginia, Sears placed a big emphasis on education. During her time serving as the Vice President of the Virginia Board of Education, she was dismayed by the poor performance she saw coming from Virginia students and was thus moved to advocate for bringing healthy competition into education. As a strong supporter for school choice, Sears spoke about her conviction that money for school should be given to the child, not the schools, in order to give children a brighter educational future.

Speaking to the young conservatives in the room, Sears advised us to value relationships first. She told us to invite more of our left-leaning peers to our meetings and to attend the meetings of liberal organizations on campus. She encouraged us to see conservatism like a business, warning us not to scare away any potential customers.

This event brought together a great turnout from American University’s small, but mighty, conservative community. It was an honor to host such an inspiring woman on campus. Following the event, our executive board for NeW at American University had the privilege of speaking with the Lieutenant Governor. This was a great way to end Women’s History Month for our chapter.

Sincerely,
Anna Given
