What’s a “third place”? It's a space for chance encounters and unstructured conversation . . .
. . . cafes, pubs, bowling alleys, neighborhood parks.
These places connect us to others and enrich our lives.
But their place in American society is dwindling as suburbia, screens, and COVID have privatized leisure . . .
. . . and in the urban spaces that do have an abundance of potential “third places,” people tend to be obsessed with productivity and overscheduled.

In his viewing, proponents of minimalism today just swap out the lie of consumerism with a new lie: “that physical things are a distraction from what really matters in life.”
On the contrary: We must recognize that “human life involves interaction with and ownership of real things.”
True freedom lies in rootedness. In limits. Not in freedom from all possessions. Is the Millennial sitting in a hotel room scrolling digital #content living a freer and more fulfilling life than the man tending his family’s farm?
Winter instead urges us to pursue “a sort of materialist maximalism ([link removed]) .”
