Friends:
It’s no secret that the Latinx community has been the target of online disinformation campaigns for years. From misleading ads on Facebook to conspiracy theory threads circulating on WhatsApp, dangerous anti-immigrant narratives have been inflamed by exploitative actors onto our community — all for political gain.
So, United We Dream Action teamed up with Harmony Labs to release a report exploring how Latinx people encounter immigration narratives in U.S. media.
Before we explain our findings, we have to ask: Will you consider making a contribution to support our disinformation defense work? Even $10 will go a long way to fund more research and help us root out anti-immigrant disinformation at the source.
Our findings were fascinating and illuminating. Check it out:
Latinx Men and Women 36+: Practical & Tuned-In
- This age group of millennials and older generations consume anti-immigrant stories primarily through right-wing news, especially on TV, where they are seeing immigration stories from right-wing sources like OAN News and Fox and Friends, and on YouTube.
Latinx Women 18–35: Caring & Community-driven
- More than any other audience group, young Latinx women are searching for information about immigration and the immigrant experience — looking to learn about the health and well-being of immigrants, as well as the best law schools for immigration law.
Latinx Men 18–35: Entrepreneurial & Individualistic
- Our research showed that young Latino men are rarely consuming immigrant content. This vacuum of immigrant content along with their concerns about the economy, and penchant for individualism make them easy targets for racialized disinformation about the role of immigrants in this country.
This research only proves how urgently needed our work is. We need to intervene now and fight back against racialized disinformation being waged by bad actors.
We’ll be applying these learnings into content and anti-disinformation programming to better engage these key audiences, show up in the spaces where they want to consume it, and experiment with key cultural influencers.
Can we count on you to support this critical work? Make a contribution today to support our disinformation defense work so we can pursue even more solutions to fight back against lies, propaganda, and disinformation targeted at our communities.
