Hi friend,

Many of us have been waking up to letters about the rising cost of our bills. Whether its energy bills or council tax, this cost of living crisis is pushing millions more into debt.

Across the UK £4.4 billion is now owed in council tax back-payments. Council tax debts can pile up fast, if you miss one monthly payment you could become liable for the whole year.

Despite this, many councils still use bailiffs to collect these debts.

A visit from a bailiff is one of the most stressful parts of dealing with debt. They often use force to enter homes, sometimes with children inside, and can seize possessions. Sometimes they even come for the wrong people.

An estimated 1 in 3 bailiffs break the rules. It’s time councils ban the bailiffs.

Some councils have stopped using bailiffs altogether. And there is no evidence that bailiff use increases the amount of debt collected. It’s outdated, wrong and just doesn’t work. Much more ethical ways of dealing with debts are available.

Right now, we’ve got a chance to make sure your local council stops bailiff use.
Tell your council to ban bailiffs for good! ([link removed])

This May, hundreds of councillors across the UK are standing for election and are more open to hearing our views. We must let them know that their residents want to see an end to bailiff use.

Thanks for your time, and have a lovely Easter.

In solidarity,
Louie
