Hi Friend,

Nancy here, checking in from Warsaw, where I've joined the IRC Emergency Response team as we assist people fleeing conflict in Ukraine. It's been a few weeks since I've written to you, so I wanted to send you my latest report about what I'm seeing here on the ground. I've also attached some pictures from what I've witnessed, below. More than 4 million people have now crossed into neighboring countries like Poland, Romania and Hungary, while another 7 million remain internally displaced within Ukraine.

As the conflict escalates, it has become increasingly clear that people are fleeing for their lives. People now arrive with small shopping bags instead of large suitcases. The looks of defiance etched on the faces of early evacuees have been replaced with vacant stares and downcast eyes.

Our teams are on the ground in Poland, working with partners to provide food, water, health care, emergency shelter, sanitation facilities and other assistance. We are procuring essential items such as sleeping bags and blankets, and providing medical equipment to health teams operating at refugee reception centers and border crossing points. In addition, we are assisting new arrivals with psychosocial and legal support, cultural assistance and translation services.

We're also working with local partners to send emergency supplies across the border into Ukraine for those that are still in the country. These include groceries, blankets, warm clothes, electrical appliances and stoves where gas and electricity has been destroyed.
