Looking at the last two years, folks who were already doing pretty well did much better than anyone who was already struggling. What was a gap, turned into a canyon.
We don't have to accept the status quo. In the coming years, our elected leaders on the Council and in the Mayor's office are going to have the opportunity to do better. To get back to better.
You've heard me talk about it before. So what's the vision I want to pursue?
For the past year and a half, I've been honored to co-chair the Council's Special Committee on COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery with Councilmember Vince Gray. Last week, we released a set of recommendations after more than a year of research and public hearings focused on four key areas in our recovery, including our safety net, small businesses, transportation, and housing.
This is part of my vision for how we recover better. We can't simply tread water or return to normal. Because normal wasn't working out so well for a whole lot of neighbors, and we can't ignore many of the painful lessons we learned over the most desperate months of the pandemic.
