Biden accuses Russia of “Genocide”

From the story: “I called it genocide because it’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is just trying to wipe out even the idea of being Ukrainian,” Biden told reporters Tuesday on a trip to Iowa. He added that it would be up to international lawyers to decide whether what was happening in Ukraine qualified as genocide, “but it sure seems that way to me” (NBC News). From Erick Erickson: Biden now says there is genocide and he won’t do anything about it. Brave, bold leadership there (Twitter).

More Bad News: Wholesale Inflation Jumps 11.2 Percent

From the story: The Labor Department said Wednesday that its producer price index – which tracks inflation before it hits consumers – jumped 1.4 percent in March from the prior month and 11.2 percent from a year ago. It is the largest 12-month increase in wholesale prices since annual rates were first calculated in 2010, adding to pressure on President Joe Biden as inflation emerges as a top voter concern (Daily Mail). From Andy Puzder: On Wednesday, the BLS shared their latest data for the Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures the prices paid by wholesalers for their goods. Over the past year, it surged by 11.2%, the highest yearly growth on record. The prices wholesalers pay inevitably make their way to retail prices at gas pumps, grocery stores and just about everywhere else consumers shop. Later: Everywhere you look, Biden is setting new economic records — and not the good kind. Every month, Americans await the latest CPI data to find out not whether, but rather how much inflation increased in the past month. It’s become a morbid ritual (Fox News).

Ukrainian Missiles Take Out Flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet

From the story: On Wednesday afternoon, Eastern, multiple Ukrainian sources started reporting that the Moskva (Moscow), the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, had been hit by two Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles fired from near Odesa. The missile is a native Ukrainian design based on the Russian Kh-35, but it has superior range and accuracy because it wasn’t designed in Russia. It has a range of about 175 miles and only entered active service in 2021 (RedState). Meanwhile, more weaponry pours in from the west and Russia is unable to stop it (AP).

CDC Extends Travel Mask Requirement

From the story: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was set to extend the order, which was to expire on April 18, by two weeks to monitor for any observable increase in severe virus outcomes as cases rise in parts of the country. The move was being made out of abundance of caution, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to preview the CDC’s action (AP). From Noah Rothman: NYT pegs the 7-day average of new cases at 31,567 as of 4/12. Seven days ago, it was 28,550. An increase of ~3,000 cases in a country of 330 million. When mask mandates disappeared en mass, we were averaging ~200,000 cases per day (Twitter). From Seth Mandel: Shapiro’s message fell on deaf ears. Swing state Dems owned again (Twitter).

WSJ: Violence in New York is Product of Progressives

From the story: The shooting comes some 100 days after new Mayor Eric Adams took office on a platform of restoring public order. The mayhem has continued. It’s impossible to understate the damage done to the city by former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s soft-on-crime and hard-on-police policies. New York had a renaissance under mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, who made controlling crime a priority. But the progressive left has come to dominate New York politics, and it has derided the policies that cleaned up the streets. No surprise, crime has made a comeback. The problem isn’t guns, which New York strictly regulates. The problem is the lack of political will to keep criminals and the homeless mentally ill off the streets.

DeSantis Pushing New Congressional Map That Gives GOP Big Gains

From the story: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, in a move that will likely trigger a huge legal fight, is pushing ahead with a new congressional map for his state that could allow Republicans to pick up an additional four seats this year (Politico). From another story: Congressional experts noted that if DeSantis’ map is successfully implemented, it would entirely wipe out all the redistricting wins that Democrats have secured thus far for the upcoming midterm elections (Daily Wire).

Los Angeles Dealing with Growing Gangs of Violent Thieves

From the story: Los Angeles has been plagued by roving gangs of ‘follow-home’ bandits targeting upscale districts and mugging shoppers of their expensive jewelry and goods, police say. Cops have identified at least 17 gangs in the southern part of the city that work independently. They use spotters to scope out people wearing high-end watches or driving expensive cars, Capt. Jonathan Tippet, head of the Los Angeles Police Department’s ‘Follow-home robbery’ task force told the city’s police commission on Tuesday. As many as five carloads of people have followed home some targets, swarming them to steal watches, handbags or cars before they have much of a chance to resist, Tippet said.

Focus on the Family Highlights Fatherhood Bill from Florida

From Focus on the Family president Jim Daly: It’s called the “Responsible Fatherhood Bill,” and funds will be distributed to nonprofit groups committed to dads. The dollars will be focused on mentoring and numerous other father-related resources. This promises to be money well spent. “Incredibly, there are those who diminish the importance of fatherhood and the nuclear family — we will not let that happen in our state,” said Governor DeSantis. “I am proud to say we are doing everything we can to support involved fatherhood in Florida.” Every scientific measurement of child well-being around the globe consistently reveals that fatherlessness is profoundly harmful to children and society.
