Dear John,

ANZAC Day 2022 remembrance services

ANZAC DAY - 25 April 2022 DAWN SERVICE in Papakura Town Centre

A DAWN SERVICE has now been scheduled for 6 am on Monday 25 April 2022 at the Cenotaph in Papakura. Everyone is welcome to attend this special commemorative Service for ANZAC Day.

Despite relinquishing their physical space in Wood Street, our Papakura Returned Services personnel and serving Service personnel will gather for the customary DAWN SERVICE at the Papakura Cenotaph. Papakura is a garrison town and a Dawn Service will always be held here on ANZAC Day.

Remembering our ANZACs every year shows the dedication of our Returned Service personnel and Serving personnel, to their fallen comrades. Honouring their memory is part of the tradition and heritage of being an ANZAC Returned Service person. Together we honour all those who died at or returned from World War One and also those who died or are Returned Service persons from the subsequent conflicts of World War Two, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and conflicts in Afghanistan, East Timor and many other places where New Zealand men and women have served our allies and our country in the fight for freedom and democracy.

This month our Service personnel have flown to Europe to offer support to the people of the Ukraine and we hold them in our thoughts and pray for peace to come soon.

Today 104 years on from the end of World War One, our original ANZAC’s have gone to their eternal rest. But their spirit is carried forward by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who represent them in 2022. We hope that these descendants also have the qualities of their fathers, mothers, grandparents and great grandparents and other relatives who were selfless, giving, loyal, tireless and brave beyond words on behalf of their families, their country, their comrades at arms and our democratic principles of freedom and truth in New Zealand.

It is humbling to be part of these commemorations for all who regard New Zealand as home and who today offer thanks and gratitude for their sacrifice in preserving our way of life and our free democracy.

“In the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. We will remember them.”
