Late last night, the Trump-endorsed Governor of Virginia decided he wanted to move the Loudoun County School Board elections up to this November , putting all nine board members up for reelection a full year ahead of schedule. Simply because he wants to install a whole new School Board.
This is a blatant attempt to undermine our local elections and reject the will of voters for purely political reasons.
Act now. Help ensure the Senate remains a brick wall against attacks on democracy by making a contribution. [[link removed]]
These actions are an egregious overreach of power in itself. The Virginia Constitution does not grant a Governor this kind of authority. More importantly, Youngkin’s actions set the precedent that democracy and the voices of voters in their local elections can be subverted.
As an educator, I believe every student deserves a high-quality education that challenges critical thinking and prepares students for engagement in a complex world. Our school boards are elected by voters within their respective school districts to deliver on this promise of a strong public education.
Youngkin, a former private equity multi-millionaire with no government experience nor interest in our public school system, wants to defund public education, and hopes to hand-select school boards to help him do just that.
Youngkin can count on me to help ensure this amendment never sees the light of day. Our public schools cannot become the playground for partisan political maneuvers, and protecting the integrity of our local elections is fundamental and critical. If Youngkin thinks this strategy will work in Loudoun, which of our local school districts will he target next?
