Dear John,

It’s Black Maternal Health Week – a time to get educated and mobilized around how each of us can support improving Black maternal health.

U.S. maternal health outcomes are worsening at an alarming rate, with Black women and birthing people bearing the brunt of this crisis. These emergencies stem from historical and ongoing racism and are tied to this country’s dark and disturbing legacy of reproductive control and coercion.

And with abortion access facing dire challenges – including the likely upcoming loss of the protections afforded by Roe v. Wade this summer – Black women and pregnant people, other people of color, and folks struggling to make ends meet will face exponential challenges and harm, as maternal health and abortion access intersect.

It is more important than ever that we place Black, Indigenous, and people of color at the forefront of our conversations about access to abortion and maternal health. Join us in supporting the work of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance [[link removed]], a national network of Black women-led organizations and multi-disciplinary professionals who work to ensure that all Black Mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy, and our current partners who are working on this issue: The Foundation for Black Women's Wellness, [[link removed]] Black Women's Blueprint, [[link removed]] and The Black Doula Project.
