Friend,

After yesterday's tragedy, I'm holding loved ones in Sunset Park and across New York in my heart. We must continue to fight for a city built on mutual care, including tackling the root causes of violence through diversion programs and accessible services for all New Yorkers: access to affordable health care, good union jobs, and stable housing.

As you may have seen, this weekend #GoodCause legislation was trending on Twitter, with many of my fellow legislators voicing their support for S3082. Like my colleagues, I believe that all New Yorkers should have a safe and stable place to live without the threat of eviction by rising rents and unfair housing tactics.

As many labor unions fight for worker protections and higher wages for their members in the workplace, it is vital that working families have protections at home as well. 

The wage wins that many unions fight to secure for their workers are wiped out by the rising cost of housing, with landlords raising rents to astronomical prices or evicting renters by retaliatory means to eventually raise rents.

Supporting workers and their families is a top priority for me – both in the workplace and in their homes. I stand with the 64% of voters supporting Good Cause legislation and labor unions such as 1199SEIU, CWA, The New York State Nurses Association, and others supporting this bill. Providing these basic needs to New Yorkers will make our city safer for everyone.
