Kennedy Institute Newsletter | SPRING 2022
FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Hello friends,

This coming November 7 will mark the 60^th anniversary of the day in 1962 that Ted Kennedy joined the United States Senate, the beginning of an unparalleled, extraordinarily productive almost 47-year tenure in the upper chamber.

Here at the Institute that bears his name, we will be making the 60^th anniversary of the commencement of Senator Kennedy’s legislative service a major focus of our 2022 events and programming—-not just to honor one of the key milestones of his life, but to take the opportunity to lift up and celebrate his enduring legacy: A commitment to civic engagement and participatory democracy, to both passionate advocacy and, when and where possible, bipartisan compromise on solutions and positive results for all Americans.

Over the coming months, we’ll be exploring some of the many highlights of Senator Kennedy’s life and career as a pre-eminent legislator and compromise-builder. We’ll explore how the leaders of today and tomorrow may apply that legacy to building stronger communities, a more united country, and a renewed American civic life.

Every Tuesday through Friday, Kennedy Institute staff are also helping educate and inspire the next generation of leaders through our in-person and online civic education offerings for students in grades K-12, in college and graduate school, and adult education/lifelong learner classes. Through programs like Real Life Civics, Welcoming Words, Pathways to Citizenship and Environmental Justice, and Today’s Vote, in which students become “senators for a day” - debating, compromising, and voting, we’re making the work of the Senate and participatory democracy come alive for people of all ages.

In this time of deep partisan division in our country, exemplified by the 50-50 split in the Senate, we think it’s never been more important to promote Senator Kennedy’s vision of an America where we are engaged and committed citizens and, in his words, sailing toward the shores of liberty and justice for all.

Sincerely,

Sue Heilman
Interim Executive Director

** The Kennedy Institute stands with the people of Ukraine
------------------------------------------------------------
Immediately after Russia attacked Ukraine, Kennedy Institute Board Chair Bruce A. Percelay issued this statement on behalf of the Institute:

The unprovoked and unjustified invasion by Russia of Ukraine is uniting Americans in outrage against President Putin’s act of aggression.

The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is an institution whose core mission is the promotion and celebration of democracy, in our country and in nations throughout the world. All of us at the Kennedy Institute stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and President Volodymyr Zelensky as they bravely fight to preserve their national sovereignty, their way of life, and their historic identity and self-determination as Ukrainians.

We have all seen how fragile democracy can be and by supporting Ukrainians, we support all free nations around the world.

In his statement, Bruce encouraged readers to consider donations to support the Ukranian victims of the Russian invasion to the following charities:
* Save the Children, www.savethechildren.org/us/where-we-work/ukraine
* Project Hope, www.projecthope.org
* Global Giving, www.globalgiving.org

Kennedy Institute launches new social media channels for teachers

One of our highest priorities is engaging more K-12 students and teachers in our in-person and virtual civic education programs as a “senator for a day” interactive learning programs. To help us get the word out to more teachers, principals, and school district curriculum developers, we’ve recently launched two new teacher-specific social media channels with “news you can use” about how the Kennedy Institute can help augment civics, history, and social studies classes and for teachers to share how they are using Kennedy Institute resources with their students.

We encourage you to take a look at our new channels—-and please make sure to tell any teacher you know who could use these channels to check them out, sign up as followers, and like and share our content. You can find our teacher-focused social media channels on Twitter at @EMKCivics ([link removed]) , on Facebook at www.facebook.com/emkcivicsed ([link removed]) , and on Instagram at instagram.com/emkcivics ([link removed]) .
