“The Supreme Court is playing hardball politics, and democracy is losing”
— Boston Globe Opinion
John,
A new opinion piece in The Boston Globe lays bare just how nakedly political the conservative majority on the Supreme Court has become.
Now that they have the majority on the court, they’re not even trying to appear consistent. They’ve been making decisions that contradict each other all over the place, but there’s one key similarity: The rulings all entrench the political power of white Republican voters at the expense of racial minorities who are driving the nation’s growth.
One thing is clear: We can’t rely on the Supreme Court to protect the right to vote and to have everyone’s vote count equally. That’s why we need to take a multi-pronged approach that involves fighting in the states and at the ballot box to defend our democracy – in other words, exactly what the NDRC has been doing since our launch in 2017.
We’ve made big progress so far, and we’ve got even bigger plans for the future. But we need your help to keep it up: Will you pitch in $10 right now to support the NDRC’s ongoing efforts to protect democracy?
Boston Globe opinion:
“Indeed, it’s not even consistent … except in how it narrows the Voting Rights Act, limits the voting power of racial minorities, and entrenches Republican political advantage.”
“Several conservative justices even want to strip the power of governors and state courts to have any say over redistricting and election procedures at all.”
“This is hardball politics divorced from history, consistency, morality, and precedent. The court is actively hollowing away the small-d democratic authority that binds a nation together.” |
The threat to our democracy is real, John, and that threat should motivate us all to take action. The one thing the enemies of democracy want most is for people like you to give up and let them win without a fight — and we refuse to let that happen.
So if you can, please pitch in today to help the NDRC keep up the fight to end voter suppression and gerrymandering so we can protect our democracy!
