A slightly blurred collage of community photos. A march with yellow signs, two people hugging, a meeting, and a person talking on a megaphone are visible. There is a transparent blue overlay and a semi-transparent lighter blue box with the words "Headwaters Foundation for Justice e-newsletter" in black.

Emma Olson aims to be a steward for her community

April’s installment of our Donor Stories project shines a spotlight on Emma Olson – dedicated donor organizer and Headwaters Development Committee member.

In her story, Emma shares how her experience in the Giving Project deepened her connection to her racial identity and her grounding in movement work. She also shares how she works in her sphere of influence to uproot white supremacy culture as a mixed-race person in the public sector.

“The first step to eliminating white supremacy culture is unmasking it, especially in ourselves. I aim to be a champion in fostering creativity and uncovering white supremacy culture in my work. At the center of that is creating opportunities to build genuine connections and trust and making space for creativity to flourish.”

We invite you to get to know Emma and learn about her journey with Headwaters by reading her story on our website.

Actualizing Equity in Community Engagement
Friday, April 29, 2022 at 11 a.m.

The COVID 19 pandemic caused massive shifts in the way we organize and advocate for systems and policy change. To protect our collective health while meeting the urgency of the moment, we had to adjust our strategies and tactics to mobilize our communities and bring both new and long-standing demands to institutions of power. Across issue areas and geographies, the unrelenting uncertainty and peril took a toll on our bodies, spirits and relationships — and also made space for new ideas that can make our movements more creative, inclusive and accessible.

As we continue to navigate the ongoing pandemic, what challenges have we faced and what opportunities have we embraced? Join us for a conversation with organizers who will share their insights, experiences and ideas.
