Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault
Alleged rapist, State Senator Steven Roberts (D), has announced his bid for Missouri’s First Congressional Seat.
On behalf of the sexual assault survivors in our membership and those in the St. Louis area, the St. Louis Young Democrats' Board unequivocally condemns gender-based violence and its perpetrators. To those who signify with their actions that they either do not believe survivors or just do not care and support Roberts—we see you.
We want to acknowledge Amy Harms and the late Cora Faith Walker for bravely coming forward to share your stories. This Sexual Assault Awareness month and every month, we say to all survivors who share their stories and to all who are unable to, thank you. We believe survivors. We believe Black women. We believe womxn, nonbinary folx, children, men who are sexually assaulted. We believe you.
We also acknowledge the history and injustice of white women falsely accusing Black men of sexual assault. The victims of such persecution, including Emmet Till, are disrespected when Roberts perversely uses their victimization to hide his allegations, as well as cruelly discredit and emotionally attack sexual assault survivors. We condemn racism, sexism, violence, and their intersections.
The St. Louis Young Democrats implore Roberts to suspend his campaign. We also urge Roberts to resign from the Missouri Legislature, and for the Missouri Democratic Party to censure him.
The Saint Louis Young Democrats are committed to equity and justice. This means publicly standing against Steve Roberts.
