Dear friend,

While FAMM does not take positions on nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court, I couldn't help but be excited by last week's confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The news coverage focused on the historic nature of Judge Jackson being the first Black woman to be nominated to the high court. That history-making matters because representation matters, and if millions of young Black girls across America dream bigger dreams because of the trail Judge Jackson has blazed, that's all to the good.

Judge Jackson is making history in another way. She will be the first former public defender on the Supreme Court and the first justice with significant criminal defense experience in more than 30 years. She also served as a commissioner on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, the independent body that drafts the federal sentencing guidelines. FAMM staff had the pleasure of working with Judge Jackson during her time there.

We have more than enough former prosecutors serving as judges. We need more judges who have experience protecting and defending the constitutional rights of accused people. And we need justices on the Supreme Court who understand federal sentencing laws and policies, and the impact they have on real people. Judge Jackson will bring those experiences to the court – and for that we are grateful.

Sincerely,
