Dear John,

Alabama’s working families need relief from the high costs of food and medicine – and they need your help to make it happen.

The state sales tax on groceries costs Alabamians the equivalent of two full weeks of groceries every year. This unfair and backward tax drives struggling families deeper into poverty and increases hunger rates in Alabama. Fortunately, people across the state are speaking out.

Our recent polling shows that three of every five Alabamians support untaxing groceries without cutting education funding. And excitingly, we’re seeing our elected officials take action. After years of work from members like you, both Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike stepped up this year to champion legislation that would eliminate the state grocery tax. We built more bipartisan support for this issue than ever.

Though the session has ended, our fight to lift this undue cost off all Alabamians will continue throughout the year. Your contribution is vital to ensuring we can keep up this work and that the crucial momentum we’ve gained doesn’t stop. Will you make a gift today and accelerate our efforts to eliminate the state grocery tax?

Alabama is one of only three states, along with Mississippi and South Dakota, with no tax break on groceries. And you can see this unfair trend throughout our state tax system: Proportionally, Alabamians with low and middle incomes pay about double the amount of their income in state and local taxes that the richest people do. This means Alabama has one of the most upside-down tax structures in the country. And that tax structure is holding our state and our people back from reaching their full potential.

Together, we can change this reality. We can make Alabama a place where all people can thrive. And we can start by untaxing groceries for everyone, to eliminate a tax on survival and lower the cost of food for all Alabamians.

Please donate today to help create an Alabama where all people will have access to more affordable food.

Together, we can put food back on the table for our families.

In solidarity,

McKenzie Burton, Development Associate
