Alabama is one of only three states, along with Mississippi and South Dakota, with no tax break on groceries. And you can see this unfair trend throughout our state tax system: Proportionally, Alabamians with low and middle incomes pay about double the amount of their income in state and local taxes that the richest people do. This means Alabama has one of the most upside-down tax structures in the country. And that tax structure is holding our state and our people back from reaching their full potential.
