Striking Howard University Hospital workers gain wide support
Howard University nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and social workers, members of the D.C. Nurses Association, gained wide union and public support when they staged a 24-hour strike Monday. Between 100 and 200 picketers, depending on the time of day, paraded on the sidewalk in front of the hospital’s main entrance on Georgia Ave., N.W. The union support came from the Metro Washington Labor Council, SEIU 32BJ and Locals 500 and 722, Jobs With Justice, several CWA members—and from frequent honking horns of solidarity from passing Metrobuses, whose operators are members of ATU Local 689. The “nurses are the ones who have been helping us in the pandemic,” said Metro D.C. President Dyana Forester of UFCW Local 400. A picket line “is the last place they should be,” but they were forced into it. Many speakers said the nurses deserved a large raise, not the hospital’s proposed cuts in shift-staffing, which would cut their pay. Read more here.

Timesland News Guild reaches new contract
Journalists of the Timesland News Guild have reached a new contract with Lee Enterprises “that secures important protections and employee pay raises,” the union reported on Tuesday. The Washington-Baltimore News Guild called it “an inspiring win for Guild members, the community, and local news!” The Guild represents about 30 people at The Roanoke Times and Laker Weekly. |
NLRB to certify first unionized climbing gym at Movement Crystal City
Workers at Movement in Crystal City are one step closer to becoming the first unionized rock climbing gym in the US. Workers voted for a union in November 2021, but Movement filed objections, claiming that organizers interfered with the fairness of the election. After the National Labor Relations Board overturned all three charges, the company declined to appeal the ruling, and the NLRB will certify the vote. "We're excited to give the workers at Crystal City a seat at the table,” said organizer Sylvain La.
